MID WAVE AND LONG WAVE INFRARED THROUGH FOG

Infrared cameras can provide enhanced visibility through many atmospheric obscurants, but the performance varies by camera wavelength, obscurant density and other factors.  We often get questions about which  infrared camera wavelengths see best through fog.  And while it’s difficult to measure fog,  these videos offer some insight into how a mid wave 3 -5µm system compares to a long-wave 7-12µm bandpass system.

The first clip features our current performance based Nucleus mid wave and long wave cameras.  Both have 50mm HD lenses.  The long wave system has an engineering grade array, so please excuse the handful of blemishes.   This was captured in mid August on the New Hampshire coast at 7AM.   The visible light footage offers some sense of the atmospheric interference.    We continue to gather test data so if you have a specific target or scene you would like captured, please reach out.   This first clip was captured for a defense client.

More information about FOG

This sample happens to be radiation fog common to the Pacific Northwest.  The mid wave camera is a cooled InSb 640 x 480 system, and the long wave is an uncooled microbolometer.
